The world wide web has become a dominant medium of publication in research community. The web's potential educational role is equally promising
and already most of educational institutions in developed world use the
web as the main if not the exclusive medium to deliver educational material to
their students. However, outside this usually closed world the promise of the
web is compromised by several factors:
a) The jungle-like structure of
web: trying to find a site with desirable content or characteristics using presently
available search mechanisms identifies an increasing number of candidate sites
but rarely comes up with quick answers. The situation is similar when it comes
to the neuroscience resources.
b) The development of web-based
educational material is expensive. There is a wide variety of types of material
available reflecting a variety of
educational "concepts" – something that makes offerings difficult to structure.
c) In spite of several large collections of web-based neuroscience
resources, none of these sites provide an evaluation of material.
By
establishing IBRO-Edu - IBRO hopes to provide quality resources
for neuroscience education (and research) to its members under the supervision of an Editorial
Board.
The short-term goal of the project is to identify, evaluate and provide
organized access to educational materials in neuroscience already available on
the web. In a later phase, IBRO- Edu will add to this resource by soliciting and
creating new material possibly an on-line textbook of neuroscience.
